I have a silverfish infestation in my kitchen. When I turn the light on at night they go scurrying under the kitchen units. Are they harmful and how do I get rid of them?

Thanks for these answers. My house was built in 1860 and has a cellar, so perhaps I am in need of a dehumidifier in the cellar. It does feel a little damper now than when we moved in. I'll ask a new question about dehumidifiers. Cheers!

They are not harmful...just disgusting. They like moisture and paper products. You will need to invest in plastic containers with lids and put all you cereals and pastas and flour into these containers to get rid of the boxes and bags they come in because that's what silverfish feed on. Make sure you don't leave out any food or beverages and keep the kitchen spotless. If you have any water leaks or areas of moisture get these dried up. You will not completely get rid of these critters, but you can keep them to a minimum.

Yuck! I live in the desert and still have silverfish...so it's not just a damp thing. I used boric acid powder that I got at a hardware store. Sprinkle at the baseboards and push it under with a piece of paper or a small hand broom. (This works for roaches too!) They actually take this back to the nest by carrying it on their legs. After a few weeks/months they seem to disappear! Good luck!

No, they're not really harmful, but you can get rid of them with just an over the counter insecticide, like Raid. Spray it everywhere under your counters and under your sink. Also make sure that you don't have any holes where the pipes are at coming into your kitchen. If you do, then get some expanding foam, which can be bought at any hardware store. Best of luck to you.........

When I was a student I found what can only described as a Silverfish city under the kitchen lino - hundreds of them!
They're harmless enough and I sorted them out with the help of my vacuum cleaner!

silver fish only live in damp areas so maybe you have something rotting under there like the floor boards ..do you have a pipe leaking behind a wall ..you need to dry it all out and then dissinfect everything ...I had a pipe inside a wall that had been dripping for months but i knew nothing about it untill these yukky things appeared from under a unit...

Silver fish are harmless. The best way to get ride of them is to keep your cupbaords dry and clean. Disinfecting under your counters in cupboards under sinks and keeping the bathroom clean will help out alot.

They eat moulds which grow in damp areas. They are harmless but creepy. Clean well, try to ventilate damp places. Borax (boracic acid) sprinkled where they run should kill them.
