I live in the Midwest in a predominantly white community, and am white myself. I am wondering if racism is really as bad as what is shown in the media. I truly do not mean to sound ignorant and I hope that I do not come across that way. What do you feel would help to change this? Do you think that talk shows, especially Maury, feed in to the African-American stereotypes? I cannot see why America is so stubborn and hard-headed as to keep racism alive in this country. .

Why do some black people use the N word? I would think that it would be derrogatory regardless of who uses it.

There will always be those willing to degrade themselves for fame; there will always be others who view them as representatives of the race. Ignorance begets ignorance.

Racism is alive and well, I am sorry to say. Discrimination is a common occurrence today. If you stay on this site long enough you will see it in action.

I’m not sure what the cure for ignorance is. It could be information and education but one has to be willing to receive it.

Regarding the “n” word, its use (by all) is a disgrace. It is a racial slur and I’m sad that so many have embraced its use like there is some power in saying it. True freedom and power comes from what one does, not from what comes out of ones mouth.

I'm sorry, but someone who lives in that kind of community couldn't understand the fact that racism is very much alive, no matter what cultural stereotypes exist anywhere. And it's not just white people that are racist. Anyone can be a racist, even if they don't realize it. Happened to me at school, mom at work (even from other black people, the other black people are the worst), and so forth. I don't know why people are like that. It just exists and we deal with it.

People (not all them) in general are just ignorant. I heard so much was suppose to change in the new millenia and Y2K and now it's 2006. Not much better than before. Some things have improved like technology, but riots and hatred and racism just can't seem to go away as quickly as people had hoped.
