I would tell her/him A. but that's just because I'm brutally honest with all my friends. What's the point in calling each other friends if u can't be honest
but for the more sympathetic people.... go with e)--> it doens't really suit u.

First off, thank them for the thoughtful guesture. Let him/her know that you truly appreciate that they wanted to buy you something that they thought you woud like. (this will soften the upcoming "blow" to them if they have a sensitive side) You can be sincere about it, after all - you do like the fact that they gave you the gift you just don't like the gift itself.
Then just tell them that it's just not your personal style. You definately DO NOT want to use any descriptive adjectives that have a negative connotation to them. You need to keep this about the shirt, not about your friends taste in clothing. This is after all not just any old fly by night friend. This is a friend who bears gifts!! The best kind (hee hee) THEY honestly thought it was the coolest shirt ever and for some reason reminded them of you and something you might like. You might leave an ego bruise with your statement to them but you definately don't want to create an open gash and pour salt into it by being rude.
Next, invite them to go shopping with you to exchange the top with something else that is more your style. Make a fun day of it . Even foot the bill on drinks or lunch (if they're still feeling hurt) but you WANT them to be with you when you do the exchange so they can see what IS your style for the next time they go shopping for you. Exchanging the top behind their back or without telling them you're returning it might create an issue and you don't want that.
Open honesty is the foundation of any great relationship. If you cherish this one - you'll be honest.

A real friend would respect your opinion about the shirt. And what kind of friend are you not to tell her it's horrible. Don't let someone else hurt your friends feelings.

Depends on how much he/she liked the shirt! And how good a friend he is. If a good friend asked me,I would reply honestly. Fibres of Friendship are stronger then those of cloth.
So a) , because I won't want a friend to make a fool of himself. But I would find it really difficult to say that if it wasmeant as a gift for me!
My mom got me a few Tee shirts that I really hated, So I don't wear them in public, but wear them to bed, saying they are soooooo ...."comfy".
MODIFY: It is a divine duty of ours to prevent our friends from making prats of themselves.
So I would say to him, that This is just the kind of shirt you should give to John( Or anyone your friend loathes) on his birthday. It will really bring out all the obnoxious traits!!!

if it's a close friend and you would hope they would do the same thing for you-- then tell them that it's okay-- but they look better in a lot of other things. Make it positive-- if you're rude about it then you'll hurt their feelings-- but not telling them could be worse...
