It could be something as simple as a worn or loose alternator belt, it could be a bad alternator, it could be a bad connection to the battery (corroded battery terminals, or it could be that you have accessories on (A/C, Stereo system, windshield wipers, rear defroster) that are drawing more power that the alternator can provide at idle.

This is a normal occurance. Your alternator does not produce any power, or current, until the RPMs are increased. When your vehicle idles at 650-700 RPM, your alternator is turning at around 1800-2000 rpm. Some alternators do not engage until its RPMs are running at around 3000 RPM, at which your engine speed will be at approximately 900-1200 RPMS. If you continue to have any problems though, it would be recommended to take your vehicle to an automotive repair shop and have a diagnostics check done.

That is the alternator, when the engine is running faster, it's putting out more electricity, and when it's running slower, your lights dim. It's usually no problem unless you have alot of electrical needs ....for example...a high wattage sound system in your car. If you have a higher electrical need than normal, then all you have to do is get a higher watt alternator which can be purchased at any auto parts store, such as Hi/Lo, or AutoZone. Best of luck to you........

It is absolutely normal. As a long time auto mechanic I have tested hundreds of vehicles for charging system problems and it,s very simple an alternator at idle speed does not produce as much current as it does at a higher speed.Unless you are having a problem with your battery going dead I wouldn,t worry about it.

Did any one think Regulator? Though it is in the alternator it coulbe the culprit. To fix it, you would have to replace the alternator. If you do it yourself, be sure to tighten the belt when done.
