Believe it or not my daughter-in-law was having really bad dreams and waking up screaming, etc. and I bought her dream catcher from a "real" indian and the dreams stopped. You hang it above your bed and the dreams stop. I am not trying to be funny, my people (past relatives) were cherokee and they always kept dream catcher in the bedroom. If you have serious dream problems you will consider this. She had a problem believing it also, but now she does.

Have you had nightmares for all 6 years or did something happen or change recently to trigger this?
Consider seeing a therapist to talk about this. Also, keeping a journal might too, if you can stand it, even abstract painting or drawing if you're less verbally inclined. A therapist and a journal can help you understand what set these memories off, the forms your experience takes in your nightmares, and can help you figure out how to deal with this so you don't need to be tormented.

I think the nightmares are a way of trying to deal with aspects of this subconsciously. You need to find a safe way to get it out there where you can deal with it consciously. That process alone can cause some trauma, which is why I suggest finding a therapist. There are some truly excellent male therapists and psychologists out there who specialize in dealing with traumatic episodes and their effects.

Here's something that was cathartic for me in dealing with lingering effects of bad family stuff as an adult:
(If you're christian, you can try prayer instead of or in addition to a personal cleansing/separation ritual like this.) I took some stuff that this person had given me recently and a list of what I wanted to say to them. I had a fire pit in my yard, so I lit a fire and burned all the stuff slowly, watching as each thing was consumed and turned into ash. That evening I wrote about how I felt and then later I had friends over and watched incredibly stupid movies (e.g. Tommy Boy). The next day, when the ashes were cold, I scooped them out of the pit, tied them in a cloth, and buried them off my property.

It's all symbolic, but symbolism is a language our subconscious understands very well. I think this is why dream catchers work for some people. Some of us prefer our own rituals. Consider what yours could be, research nightmares and folk remedies and see about adapting something that suits you. Again, it is about the symbolism.

And please do look into finding a professional to talk to (professional b/c non-professionals just sometimes say stupid things out of ignorance and that can suck).
Good luck.

I'm no expert on this, but it seems to me that you may have unresolved issues that you still carry around with you. I would seek out a trusted friend who is willing to listen, and give his or her input, or make an appt to see a psychologist to resolve these issues once and for all. Remember, when you're waking up with nightmares you're robbing yourself of the quality sleep that you need. Seek help, please.

Good luck, my friend.

I have nightmares I am living at home with my step-father still. I don't think there is really anything you can do. Perhaps look into hypnosis.Good luck.
