The most famous modern Russian writer was Boris Pasternak who wrote "Doctor Zhivago". The story takes place during the revolution. A movie was made of the book that was popular.

I remember reading "Doctor Zhivago" back in 1959 when I was a senior in high school.

Of course one of the most famous love stories is "War and Peace" by Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy. It is a challenge to read because it is so long but filled with many stories woven together.

You didn't say what language you read but I'm assuming it is English. No, Russians didn't burn books, but the communists did make life difficult for many writers, including Pasternak. Boris was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature but the USSR government prevent him from accepting it. Pasternak mainly supported himself by translating Shakespeare's plays into Russian and writing some beautiful poetry.
