It depends on which zone they are in. In the Conmebol (South American) Zone, they play 10 games, with the top 4 qualifying and the 5th placed team entering a play-off with Oceania's representative. (This case Australia).

In Europe, there are 8 groups with the top 8 qualifying direct together with the 2 best runners-up (Poland and Sweden). The other 6 teams enter a play-off, with the winners advancing.
On average each team play 10 qualifiers.

In Asia and Concacaf (North/Central America), there pre-qualifiers before, a final grouping (2 groups in Asia, 1 Concacaf).
The top 4 teams in Asia qualify direct and the top 3 from Concacaf.

There is a play-off spot between these 2 zones for 1 more place, Trinidad & Tobago won by eliminating Bahrain.

All in all, almost every team has to play 10 games minimum, but others (especially those involved in play-offs), have to play between 12 to 14 games.
