I agree with shop vacs.. they pick up dirt very well. You can get all kinds of attachments. When you have a sink that wont drain, you can vacuum the water out and effectively use forced air to clear the drain...saves a fortune in plumbing costs. The only drawback, they can be messy if you don't use a canister liner or change a filter.. They are great for cleaning tile floors as well. Mop, leave the water there and vacuum it up. Rinse and mop again...you will not be spreading dirty water....

I have a Kirby G6. We have had it for 5 years and still love it. The only complaint I have is having to take it apart to add the attachments. Other than that, I do all my cleaning with it. Plus it comes with the carpet shampooer. The cost of a Kirby is around $2000. But you can trade things in to drop the price. For instance, we traded our old vacuum cleaner. I have also heard of people trading small appliances (i.e. microwaves) to discount the price.

My mom has had a Kirby since I was like 5 yrs old (I am 34 now), and she has never had a problem with it. They are very expensive, but they do work good. I have a Bissel, and it's a POS. I would go for a Kirby or Dyson.

I have owned my first Oreck for over 10 years now and would never buy any other brand again. As well as doing an excellent vacuuming job, it is so lightweight and easy to manouver.

I love my Kirby! I'll never own another vacuum, probably won't have to worry about that for many more years anyway since they outlive any other vacuum on the market.

We've got a Kirby G-3 It doubles as a carpet cleaner...It was real pricey but it sucks up anything in it's path. It even got the cats tail, he got to close. I would recommend it if you don't mind spending $. It was about $400.00 4 years ago. No problems at all, just big and pricey.

My husband has asthma and allergies ... we use a Shark Thunderbolt Bagless Upright. He hasn't had any problems since we switched ... and that vacuum picks up everything!

The Dirt Devils I've used are good little machines. Also, I love my Bissell bagless: It picks up well, I don't have to worry about getting new bags, and as long as you take care of the filters it'll keep on going.
Good luck!
