Although I can't dispute the first posters' claims, I'd like to see the patent. Since time is money and it's all been wasted it must be gone. Daylight Saving Time (DST) was invented by Benjamin Franklin (patents not pending) so therefore all of the saved time is in and owned by the US.
England doesn't have a leg to stand on. If anything, they should admit that they use "European Summer Time" which is a blatant copy (rip-off) of the original DST. For this unmitigated travesty, England, and all others saving time with this method owe Benjamin Franklin, his estate, heirs and their assigns all the time that they have saved to date. Of course time is money.
Let's put the debt where it is due.

There was time long, long before there was an England.
Originally all time was local, based on the individual longitude of each town. With the arrival of railroads (1830's), it became necessary to co-ordinate time for train schedules; and in most countries, the "standard" time became the time of the capital city.
That worked until the 1880's, when worldwide mapping made it desireable to have "standard" zero-point longitude (and hence, standard time) for the whole earth. At that time, the British had better nautical charts than anyone else, and British nautical charts are all based on the Greenwich meridian. The world adopted that meridian as a matter of convenience in 1888.
But its still entirely arbitrary.

Worst argument ever!
The fact that GMT is the standard by which all other time zones are calibrated has nothing to do with England "inventing" time. Nobody owes YOU money... did YOU "invent" time?
in the words of Napolean... "gah! IDIOT!"

Actually the United States came up with the idea for time zones due to the fact that it was the first large country (east to west) to have a large number of railroads. The origional prime meridian was in France, it passed through Paris. But as someone else mentioned, the best maps at the time were held by the British, so in order to appease the French (have it near them), get maps from the British, and just to get a system (all the US really wanted), they had it pass through Great Britain.

Yeah you're completely right. I owe you money for using English invented time.
But I come from near the Angeln region in Germany where the Anglic tribes come from that went to England ages ago. The word "England" derives from ANGLOsaxon which in turn derives from Angeln. So you owe me money for using the word "England"
Call it even?
