The sun is heating everything up. We had a house of bricks. The south western wall always hot at end of day. The bricks just absorbed the suns energy and radiated all nite. We planted trees about 20' from house and the created shade. Worked out fine.

There are fabric shades you can buy that are reasonably priced and easy to put up. They come with grommets already in placed and can be attached directly to the house or strung on rope/wire. Since they look like boat sails (I think they are made from the same type of material) they will work well with the beach house decor. Use these to shade the western facing parts of the house and the windows.
You can also get 'solar screens' for your windows. Basically, mosquito netting that is a little darker and thicker to cut down the light/glare.

My house is the same way, no matter how hot it gets through the day, I leave the windows open and it stays pretty comfortable until late in the evening and then it gets really hot. I find if you leave some fans on or the A/C through the day, it keeps it from getting hot in the evening.

The afternoon is the hottest part of the day, and I suppose it also depends on which way your house faces and how many windows you have and how many of those you keep the blinds drawn on, etc. I live in Florida and I get sun in my house most of the day. The best thing to do is make sure your blinds are drawn as much as possible and when you're ready to flip on the AC, do it gradually. After it's been 85 degrees, it's amazing how cool 78 can feel.

depends on what your house was built with. im pretty sure if its based on wood or if its based on bricks, it will affect the temperature inside the house.
it is probably the greenhouse effect because by the time its later in the day, your house has been in the sun for more and more. even with the windows open it may not help because of the roofing. its not the air that gets hot but the house itself which causes the inside air of the house to get warmer and warmer as the day goes on.
i suggest exhaust fans to at least circulate the air.

Close the windows, close the shades, and turn the air conditioning on. Go sit and read on the beach. Then when you come home, you will have a cool house.

I, too, live near the ocean. if you own the house, you might consider an attic fan. this is either through the roof or out an attic window. it sucks the hot air out. what a difference we found after installing one. they go on and off automatically when the temp. reaches your setting.

Get some fans to cool your house off at night! There might not be any wind blowing in your house's direction at night. So just purchase some fans!
