After going to "Ask.com", the most typical answer is ....they are named after their fierce jaws.

This is a total guess, but considering in German they are Grosslibellen (big spirits), and I can find no linguistic connection...

1 They are insects that fly - hence the fly.
+1 Dragons are large creatures, they are large insects.
