I don't' think that you have that option, once you turn the game off that is it. No turning back. One thing I always did, I just left the game on and just turned the TV off. That way I could go do something else without my mom turning off the game.

You can't. The original Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genisis did not have a Lithium battery within the cartridge so the game can't be saved. The only Sonic games for the Genisis that can be saved is Sonic the Hedgehog 3
