If you do decide to use laundry soap instead of carpet shampoo, buy woolite it doesn't foam as much. I have used tide several times to do my carpets, just a little bit goes a long way and be sure to rinse it with clear cool water after you are done, just like the washer would do. I love it cuz it makes the carpet really soft, and smell great, it is after all for washing fabrics and fibers.

Plain warm water works wonders! I was using my shampooer a month ago and forgot to turn the knob that changes the amount of shampoo being applied and my rug was getting nice and clean with just water. At first I thought it was using the soap but when the water needed changed (brown, grossness that it was) I saw the shampoo level was still full. Hmmmmm. Maybe those carpet shampoos are not all that efficient? My rug sure was looking clean with just water.

If you use dish soap or laundry soap, you will most likely wind up with extremely soapy carpet and it might take a huge amount of rinsing to remove all the soap. Not sure what the soap will do to the color in the carpet.

As far as hurting things....too many suds might mess up your cleaning machine. Not certain.

Well a Happy House Dad I'm not but my guess is that laundry soap is more concentrated than rug cleaner. Using my imagination here I can see A room full of suds forming. Also, I think it's possible that due to the concentrated liquid soap, You may never get it all out of your rug.
Just a guess on all of this though, and I would not try it myself.

It produces too much suds and it will be harder to get out of the carpet and leave the carpet still when it dries. Best to use carpet shampoo you won't believe the foam it will create in your shampooer.

Carpet cleaner solution is low to non-foaming. Liquid laundry detergent is sudsy. Carpet cleaning solution is also formulated to be non rinse. Laundry detergent needs to be rinsed. Head on down to WalMart and cough up the $15 for carpet cleaning solution.

Oh it will do a fine job of cleaning the carpet... but may more than likely give you more bubbles and suds than you can handle... try small portions of laundry soap at first and see what you can live with... Good luck...

It will foam too much and you'd have to use a whole bottle of defoamer to try to keep it controlled. What's wrong with the standard carpet cleaner products?

I think laundry soap is a little too concentrated for your carpet. It would get too soapy and if you don't rinse good enough your carpet will get stiff.

It will just sit and sud up. It would be like putting dawn in the washing machine. I wouldn't recomend it but it won't hurt anything

It makes too many bubbles and causes it to overflow every where. Did that and what a mess!
