I think what you're really asking is if people prefer to follow current TRENDS or stand out. Fashion is fashion no matter what the season or trend, wether it's in or out, new, old or up & coming it's still fashion.
Trends, on the other hand, are a different story. They vary season to season and by location (city, state, country). The designers and retailer buyers are in kahoots together. They pretty much mandate what trends those we in the industry call "fashion slaves" will be wearing. Thanks to ol Abe Lincoln - NOBODY has to be a slave - even to fashion ;)
It's kind of funny though to read some people who answer that they don't follow fashion b/c wether they realize it or not they ARE actually following a set fashion trend (ie - goth or preppy) by some of the looks they choose to wear. It may not be the latest trend in their area or social circle but it's still following a fashion trend.
What's even funnier is that fashion follows us! They say big brother is watching - well big sister is watching too! Trend scouts are all over the place seeing what people are wearing that is a bit different from what's been seen before and off kilter from the "norm". They then compile the information and sell to designers who then use it for upcoming seasons and call it their own! How hysterical is that??? Trendsetters (like myself or should I say - as I've been called - I don't like to sound haughty) who have an inate 6th sense about what colors, fabric, eras and styles look good together, take trends (from whatever season) restyle, remix and modify them to create the new ones you see seasons later when it finally hits the mainstream during fashion week on the runway. By that time, trendsetters are already past that look moving on to "create the next look". I like to think of it as my contribution to society. Not very philanthropic but that's a whole other story! - I'm workin on that part ;)

Well, you can do both at the same time. If you live in a small town, for example, you could wear the fashions from New York or Paris before they get to your little town, then when the fashion you're wearing do get to your little town, you switch again to the next set of fashions from the big cities...I like people who stand out.

I'll be the first to admit i do like to be looking in fashion, however i am not one of these people who goes in the shop and buy every outfit that there possibly is. If i can afford to get a particular top that is in fashion i will, however i do sometimes like to look different and a bit odd ball with my clothes, i have be known to wear a long leather jacket in the blazing hot sun, but back then i was going through my gothic stage.

I think you should dress to what you enjoy wearing why should we be told that this year's year fashion is the so called "Look".
Everyone has a different shape and what might look good on the cat walk could look like a disaster on Joe public.
I have worn retro before it became retro and at the time I was wearing it because I loved the look, now people ask where my clothes come from!
Being diverse and having imagination is much better than looking like clones that what I think.

I hardly ever buy whats 'in' as I think most fashions look stupid, like these mini pleated skirts at the moment that all the 12 year olds are wearing - proper peadophile wet dream clothes they are. I go for whatevers comfy, normally jeans and a nice top, or classically well dressed in a skirt / suit for work. I know I look good, so what if I dont look like everyone else! :OD

I visualize my fashion as I am part of a painting ... in this painting, I do not frame myself as the "Center" piece, but rather, I like to have myself placed in the background but still captivating ... which I guess that if I'm captivating in the background, then I am standing out because I should take the eye away from the center piece a few times.
In other words, I like to be attractive, but not so attractive or stand-outish that it becomes debilitating.

I like my personality to stand out, so where I conform to fashion a little, I try to at least make it suit me. It is one thing to say you want people to value you for your mind and not your body, but it's another to relate to people with your mind more than your body.
So what I wear on my body is either somewhat plain-classic or very artistic but still modest, depending on what I'm doing that day.
If I'm handling business or doing normal errands, then I go plain, often in a scarf especially on very hot or cold days. If I'm working at a festival or hanging out...doing something fun, then I often wear a fun looking, African, or funky printed caftan, or a cute classy shirt and jeans but with a cool Indian dupatta as a sash or something.
For me, the fun and the function are more important than the trends. Some trends are cool though, so I tack them on to my style...Like novacheck. It's brilliant.

Far better to be an individual than a sheep. I will follow fashion, if it happens to suit me. It is always better to dress according to your shape and colouring rather than slavishly following fashion.
A prime example of that was the gypsy skirts that seemed to be EVERYWHERE last year - they don't suit everyone girls! Did you look in a mirror before you left the house?!
