It's actually called the Mona Lisa. It's admired because of it's mysteriousness... Is she smiling? Is she sad? It's all apart of it's beauty.

In the 1950's a song that went "Are you mine to tempt a lover Mona Lisa...or are you just a lonely lovely work of art?" took America by storm. From that time on this painting acquired a great mystique for Americans. I went to the Louvre when I was eight and I remember running down the halls as fast as I could to get to the picture. When I got there it was so small and so dark that it really didn't appeal to me at all. I was very disappointed.
It's Mona Lisa, by the way, and the true name of the picture, is "La Gioccanda" or something like that. I'm not great at Italian spelling.

Because it's realistic, famous, and otherwise painted by a famous painter. I think that they put it down as the Mona Lisa, though.

First of all it's Mona Lisa. I believe it attracts people because it's intriguing to know why she has the curt little smile like she does...some like to believe it's because she's holding in a secret.

mona lisa you mean. Its admired because of the signifgance of the painter and the anonymity of it. No one knows who mona lisa is but somewould say the artist modeled it after himself.
Im sure one day we will find out who she/he was and why it was painted.

The expression that Da Vinci captured in the work. It's as if she's hiding something and having a good laugh about it.
Side note: X-rays of the painting revealed that his own sketch was beneath the paint...could that be why she's smirking? Did he paint himself in drag?
hmmmmmm........
