For one thing, don't take medication that is not prescribe. You could harm your body more than help it. For another thing, like me, I think you have insomnia. It's kind of like a sleeping problem, that causes difficulty to fall asleep, waking up in the middle of the night or too early in the morning. I can never seem to get to sleep no matter how early or late I go to bed. Even when I'm tired, the moment I lie on the bed, I feel all awake.

Insomnia most commonly is caused by stress that you are unaware about. It also can be cause by an illness, or your sleeping habits. A change in it, what time you sleep at night, if you sleep during the day, what time you wake up every morning etc..

Sleeping pills MAY help. But they are not the best thing to take. Figure out first what is causing you insomnia. Then talk to your doctor, research it out on how if anyway to work around your problem. Your doctor may prescribe some medication. But she probably can only help you that much as to calm your body. You need to calm you MIND as well.

What I did in the beginning was I would do something, like your doctor said to relax, which to me was playing some soothing music and have some incense burning when I was ON my bed. And I just lie on my bed and close my eyes. Occasionally, that didn't help. So I would read a book. Or do a breathing exercise. Basically, anything to keep my body calm because I'm usually very excited, and I tend to get stress all the time.

Another way you can do if you are stress is to jot it down somewhere, in a book or something. Think about any reason why you may be stress, from school or work or friends or family.

You can try some of the ways I mentioned and check out the website below, and if it doesn't work, then go to your doctor again, or you can go to your doctor, check with her about insomnia, ask her if the ways above are right for you and hopefully, you can finally get a good nights' sleep!

But if you need anything, like some of the music I use, just email me at

Yeah I had that problem about 6 months ago, my doc gave me a prescription right away. She knew I had tried benadryl,my codeine cough medicine, melatonin and just tried relaxing in the dark with some music playing an hour before I actually wanted to sleep....it either didn't work or the remedies I've tried eventually stopped working.
Did your doc mention anything about restless leg syndrom? Not many muscle relaxers make you drowsy,it may say they do,but it's just a side effect that can happen.....your brother must have RLS if he's taking them, unless he's just taking them because they make him sleepy. You should tell your doctor that, and if she's hesitant to give you a medication for sleep..because a lot of people take the narcotic ones and become dependent on them...not just for sleep....ask her for a non narcotic sleep med, they are usually cheaper too because all the old sleep meds were non narcotic and the new ones are the narcotic ones.I take trazodone....there is also amitriptyline, they are both fairly cheap. Any sleep medication can give you a "hang over effect" in the morning, but keep taking it, it will eventually stop but it may take a few weeks...I only say this because a lot of people stop taking them after a few nights because they don't like the feeling in the morning.

I would save the muscle relaxers or other medications as a last resort because they could become addictive. Some herbal remedies that work well for relaxation are passion flower and velarian. They come in pill form or the loose herb. Try those in the evening several hours before sleeping.

Also avoid caffeine completely, don't take naps, and exercise during the day. Yoga and meditation might be helpful to calm the mind.

If none of this works go back to the doctor or find another doctor that specializes in sleep disorders.

I also have a lot of trouble sleeping. Most nights I can go to sleep, but cannot stay asleep. My doctor told me to never stay in the bed, tossing and turning, for more than 15 minutes. After 15 minutes of restlessness, get up and go to another room. Watch tv or read, or do something that is calming to you. I was prescribed Ativan to take at bedtime. That seems to help me. Talk to your doctor about some alternatives (medication) that may help you to sleep at night. Also, don't nap during the day. Good luck.

Relora (by Vivitas) is a natural stress-aide - it's worked wonders for me - I can now sleep much longer than I used to. I heard about it from a Pharmacist. It's available from vitamin areas at most stores (i.e. WalMart, A&P, etc.) or from health food stores.

Muscle relaxers??? No, you need sedatives or anti-anxiety drugs. Valium is over-the-counter in the States, right? You need one of those.

It helps, but feels really weird. Try it, but don't plan on doing anything for at least seven hours.
