Statement to our fans from the Backstreet Boys regarding Kevin Richardson departure from the group:
“Earlier this year, after much soul searching, Kevin Richardson came to us and told us that he had decided to leave the group and pursue other interests. He gave his blessing to continue the music without him.
We have no intention of replacing Kevin, and the door will always be open for him to return to the Backstreet Boys. We wish him the all the best in his future endeavors.
This weekend we are returning to the studio to begin the follow-up to Never Gone, and will see you later this year with a new album.”

Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell and AJ McLean

Statement from Kevin Richardson:
“After 13 years of what can only be described as a dream come true, I have decided that it is time to leave the Backstreet Boys. It was a very tough decision for me but one that was necessary in order to move on with the next chapter of my life. Howard, Brian, Alex and Nick will always be my little brothers and have my utmost love and support. I would like to thank the Backstreet fans for all the beautiful memories we have shared together and look forward to including you in the next phase of my life. I wish my brothers continued success and look forward to their new album.”

I love the backstreet boys. Followed them since day 1.
Saw them in concert last summer.
I think they will be ok without Kevin.
I'm glad they are not replacing him though, that would be hard. It wouldnt be the same!
I think if Brian, Nick or AJ left, then there would be a big problem...it would be more noticeable.
I can't wait for the new album! WEEEE!

Kevin adds nothing to the group from a musical standpoint. His piano and singing are marginal contributions to the group. From a private standpoint I believe he has always been a sort of leader to the guys; however, they're at an age now where they don't need someone to play father figure and guide them. I imagine they will end up a vegas act or something in the future and Kevin will rejoin. Regardless of what people think of 90's pop, BSB has enough good music to become a lounge act long term. The new album was good musically, but too far off from their old music that it confused their fans to some degree.

That sucks, I was a big BSB fan. But it's cool. He didn't really sing much. He did mostly backup. Honestly, I think the group will do just fine without him, if they ever make another album. I thought after the last one, they'd all go their own way anyway. Nick's doing solo's and I think Brian and AJ should too cause they have beautiful voices.

I am like so blown over by this. I think I'll take a few weeks off work and grieve. I mean, like, I thought they were going to open for Def Leppard in the fall and then meet back up with Gladys Knight and the Pimps, I mean Pips by Spring! Like, what a bummer, Dude!! Is their Antarctica Tour with the Rolling Stones cancelled too?

i think i was a good decision on his behalf. the music business has changed a lot since their 90s career and the fans want something different. they have been together for a long time and should really enjoy the success they have already had.
