WOW!!! now firefox is a miracle cure! LMFAO
Sorry to knock firefox but now that its in the ranks of miracle cure its fair game. Your free to use what ever browser you want but when MIS-INFORMATION gets spread. That's where I draw the line holding back my comments.
This is what I use and have always used.
I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)
The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.
These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.
The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

Mozilla Firefox is one of the world's most popular web browsers and, to me, it's the best.
It's surely the leader program of its type

I don't know about repair, but Firefox does replace most other browsers for general internet use.
There are a few things Firefox doesn't support (like ActiveX) because they are proprietary to Microsoft, but for just about anything Firefox will work better.

No, it isn't. Theres a lot of bull talked about Mozilla Firefox but this is a new one on me.
Firefox doesn't support Active-X, a Microsoft technology that can be misused to install malicious software on your pc.
It also doesn't support java, you have to add a plug in if you want to use javascript. Both these make it a bit safer than Internet Explorer.
Firefox cannot uninstall malicious software from your pc. Browser hijacks are one of the worst programs to try to get rid of, heres a list of safe freeware you can try including the official Firefox download site.
If these don't work you need expert help to use a program called Hijack This and to re-install your hosts file; never hand this info over to anyone other than an engineer, certainly not someone off the web.
I'd start with Avast!, Ewido and Spyware Doctor, you may need to run them in Safe Mode and turn off system restore.
Good luck.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out. Either of these firewalls are free for personal use and stop unwanted incoming and outgoing traffic. You choose which programs are allowed to access the internet. They are both fairly easy to use and updated regularly.

Instal both these web browsers, turn off javascript on one and use that browser for vising unknown websites. They don't support Active X so thats one less way for problems to get on your pc.
Winpatrol is a handy utility that tracks cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to

Microsoft have two free online scanners that look for malware.

You can also download Microsofts free Windows Defender from the official Microsoft site, and the Malicious Software Removal Tool.
Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.
Remember to turn off System Restore as it will be hiding in there and will re-install itself. You need a dedicated anti trojan, an antivirus such as AVG won't touch it. They are different programs.
To get into safe mode, repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads, if you don't manage it first time just restart and try again.
Safe mode looks very different and not all your programs will load but don't worry, its supposed to do that. The screen will run at 800 x 600. The scans will take a bit longer so just leave it to get on with it.
