Ignore them

Are you certain that this person is truly haughty, and not just very shy? Often, this is the case.

Perhaps by opening up to him or her, just a bit, she or he will also become more approachable in turn.

Ignore or try being haughty back. To much pride is bad. Another thing you can do is knock that person off their high horse.

It would be easy to say ignore him/her, but such a person can become annoying. I would suggest that you welcome your colleague's attitude and comments with questions and comments of your own that would make him/her have to further elaborate on their shallow ways. In return, you should find that your colleague may simply avoid annoying you for fear that you'll always make them justify his/her comments or actions. On the other hand, the same technique may have a positive effect on your work day, it may become the highlight of your day to encounter this colleague, you can look forward to the outrageous reactions or controversial conversation between the two of you. Heck! you may even begin to understand this person's ways and even start to like this colleague! It's up to you. You can let this person drag down your work day or make your day work for you!!!

Well, I'm assuming you're talking about a work setting. Interact with them when necessary in a business-like fashion and forget about handling them. Do your work as assigned, go home and start the next day all over again. Don't stir up trouble.
