You can use any disk to install windows, (be weary if her disk is made for a particular computer system though, as some of them have disks that have particular drivers etc).
You only need your serial number, if you do not have it, you may want to think about hooking up your hard drive to another computer and seeing if you can browse through the hard drive and try to find you serial number before you delete the information off your hard drive.
Also if you system is a pre-made (think store bought) it may well have the xp serial on the side of the case.

If you are planning on using her serial number then yes, you will have problems as once the computer is hooked up to the net it will (possibly) not activate and then you will have to contact microsoft for an activation number.
If it does activate then it is likely that one of you will have problems with windows update, (although if you just allow windows to do the updates for you then you will not have problems with Microsofts genuine advantage as it does not kick in with auto-updates.

Don't format your hard drive except as a last resort. You probably installed drivers, programs, etc. that crashed your system. Try booting from her CD and doing a repair of windows first.
