It's perfectly acceptable, in most circumstances, to type either "sq. ft." (note the two periods) or "ft²" -- although on Yahoo Answers, the superscript 2 (²) is very difficult to type, so most people generally will write "ft^2" and hope that the reader understands.
If you're using Microsoft Windows, go to Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Character Map, find the ² character, press the "Select" button, and then press the "Copy" button. The ² is now on the Windows Clipboard, where it can be pasted into Yahoo Answers.
Alternately, you can hold down the [Alt] key on your keyboard while typing the numbers [0178] on your keyboard's numeric keypad (the numbers off to the right, *not* the ones above the letters).
Hope that helps!

Yeah, I'm going down to Lowe's to get a couple pressure treated boards and make my first sq ft garden too. Or as soon as the ice melts here abouts. It's not that I can't drive on black ice. It's the danger from all the locals who think they should drive like it's a sunny day in California in their good ole boy pickups when it's slicker than owl snot. Know whut uh mean Vernon? Hey! I have a couple old tires to build a potato mound, too. Thanks for the tip!
The most widely accepted symbol for exponentiation (such as squaring) is "^". Thus square feet would be written as ft^2. Another form is "**", or ft**2. Ft2 might be recognizable but might not.
The first answer is Sq.Ft.
The second is Ft ^2 where ^ means "to the power of"
Actually both are same.

If it is 1 suare foot, you write 1 with a little 2 to the right and above the number 1. Bit hard to write on a computer. 1', where the ' is, write a little 2 above the number of feet. Understand?
