Lets put sentiments aside. I believe what Zidane did was wrong.
What ever the Italian might have said. Zidane should have put to play his discipline and experience to the Italian boy. He should have given back the insult and not have resulted to a physical show. All in all, he is human, and we all tend to make mistakes especially in certain situations. The Italian 'boy' is a coward to have said insultting words on the field of play.

OK, here is the answer. The BBC got an Italian lip reader to check out what was said to Zidane.
M: Grabs Zidane's nipple.
Zidane says something.
M: No. Calm down, liar. I wish an ugly death to you and all your family. [Z's mother was seriously ill]
M: Go f u c k yourself.
Z turns round and knocks M to the ground. With his head.

I love Zidane but I didn't like what he did. However realistically worse is done in other sports, hockey gets penalties, nascar drivers end up crashing (then fined etc.) they should consider another form of discipline. Why not give him a five minute major? He's still the best!

he shouldve known better. he shouldve known that if he headbutted somebody he'd get a red card. if he wanted to make his mother happy by winning the cup, then he shouldve just let it go instead of acting like a real terrorist. the headbutting didnt help anybody in any way. it was zidane's fault that france lost, his fault that his last match ever ended with a red card. there's no one else to blame. you can't blame matterazzi for zidane's red card, and france didnt lose because matterazzi insulted zidane's mother. everything's zidane's fault. everything that happens to you, bad or good, there's no one else to blame, only yourself. i guess zidane didnt even feel like winning anymore, because he was too worried about his mother, and that's what happened - he could leave earlier because of the red card. part of him wanted to get a red card, and so he got a red card. if he really wanted to win, then he wouldntve headbutted matterazzi.

Zidane's mother is in hospital, right? Then that Italian one said something like "your mother is a dirty c**k-su*king whore" or words to that effect, plus a racist slur on her ethnic origin. Sexist and racist abuse has no place in football, so yes he should be punished for that. As for Zidane's response, while obviously, we can't condone violence, it is perhaps understandable, given the circumstance, that he was provoked to respond in this way.

Get over it. He insulted him and Zizou could have insulted him back...it's done all the time.
I wish they would stop whining about it. Italy won and they can't accept that. LOL
