We have all heard enough about Gordon and Kenseth and who was wrong in that race, so please refrain from stating that again!

What I want to know is how do you feel about fans (technically non-fans) throwing things at Gordon?

I think these types of fans are what give Nascar fans a bad rep! This is why people see Nascar fans in whole as low life, drunk, hicks! I couldn't believe my eyes, that was so tacky! Sure have your dislike for the guy, or even hate him, but show some respect! They weren't hurting Gordon, they were hurting (well, littering) the track! What a disgrace!

What can they or should they do about this?

I think they should fine these people severely! Obviously you can't control them by banning them, they'd find another way back in, or that would be good punishment (take what they love)! I know I would be afraid to go to a race and Gordon win...geesh...grow up! I feel bad for the kids who saw that, what an example!

Why can Nascar not fine the people?

They have video, even if you don't get them all...get a few and prove a point, you could get caught! I know we can't ban them, they will get back in! The cutting beer sales after a certain point may help, but they will get it somehow!

The fans who threw things at Gordon are idiots, and it's people like that who continue to make some think of Nascar as nothing but a white-trash sport.

Gordon has been putting up with this abuse for years because he dared to beat the "good ol' boys," and now he's daring to use the same tactics against others that they've used with him. His bump was nothing out of the ordinary for Nascar, and the fans overreacted.

When Dale Earnhardt raced like that, he was treated like a hero. Gordon does it, and he's vilified.

Throwing things on the track is pretty lame, but you have to love the passion the fans have for the sport. This is not the first time fans threw stuff on the track and it won't be the last. Remember when they actually used to end races under caution? It was because fans would almost riot and cover the track with litter that they changed the rule to a green-white-checker. The fans littered the track a lot worse than they did this past weekend, thats for sure. It is a way for fans to participate and be a part of the show and a part of history. Remember, this is a show.

At Chicagloand Speedway, this year they did change the rule and banned alcohol sales during the last 25 laps of the race. Regardless, there will be bottles and cans everywhere even if they stopped alcohol sales with 50 laps to go, the fans can just pick the litter up off the ground and start throwing it.

The guy that answered this question saying that all alcohol sales should be banned and carry ins should be banned is misguided. There would be no organized professional sports if there was no alcohol sales. People like to enjoy a beer on a hot summer day at the ball park or the race track, and they enjoy a beer on a cold winter day at the football stadium. If they banned alcohol sales, attendence would bottom out and teams would go bankrupt and disappear. Sports is entertainment, people go to sporting events to be entertained, a vast majority likes alcohol while being entertained. Multi-million dollar stadiums are not built on ticket sales, it is the vending that is key. By removing the #1 source of revenue (beer sales, 95% profit), the result would be catastrophic to professional sports.

If you think it's sad or disturbing that people go to sporting events to get drunk and can't enjoy the sport without alcohol, please remember that going to a sporting event is NO DIFFERENT than going to a rock concert. The primary reason of sports is to generate revenue, the secondary reason is to entertain, the tertiary reason is to promote athleticism.

JLo I couldn't agree with you more. Now I'm not a Gordon fan and I didn't care much for the way the race ended, however there was absolutely no excuse for such infantile behavior.JLo you make a good point about reinforcing Nascar basher's belief that all fans are a bunch of drunken rednecks. I live within 7 miles of Talladega Super Speedway, when the same thing happened there I was ashamed because it reflected so bad on Alabama fans ,but we must keep in mind there is no way of knowing where these misbehaving fans come from so lets not criticize the area where the race was held instead lets hold the guilty fans responsible. It would be hard for Nascar to actually punish these fans but the local law enforcement should do their best to arrest those who participate in such ignorant and childish behavior and prosecute them to the fullest extent possible. If those of us who are true fans want other people to quit bashing and putting down the sport we love so much we are going to have to stop acting like the very thing they accuse us of being (ignorant rednecks) and start showing some class.Incidents such as happened Sunday have no place in Nascar or any other sport for that matter,we as fans certainly received a black eye again in front of a national television audience Sunday, we must show more class than that if we want to gain respectability for our wonderfull sport.

First off, I think it is very bad taste to throw anything at any driver, no matter what. I have been at races where things are thrown and a lot of times, the kids and non-drunks are as much to blame as the ones who have been drinking. It is commonly known that if a ticket holder is caught throwing anything, they will be banned from that track. I know this is flawed, because they may not be able to order tickets thru the track, but that doesn't stop someone else they know getting them into the track.
Second, most beer and other alcohol is brought in by the fans. we all know how expensive it is to drink at a racetrack. There are not many sports that allow this, bu tthey also have problems with drunk fans. It doesn't always take alcohol to make someone stupid. Many "fans" are already this way, and their actions of throwing things at drivers only prove how totally childish they really are. I hate nothing more than going to a race and being close to somebody who is a loud, drunk, die hard fan. Many of us re-order our tickets year after year, have the same seats, see the same people and even keep in contact with them thru the rest of the year. We are all fans of different drivers and we all give each other a hard time about who we cheer for. But in the end, we are there to relax and enjoy ourselves, and the joking and ribbing is all in fun. Those "fans" that can't see and understand that are the ones who may go to one race evey so often and act like an idiot. It does give us a bad name and I am sure it is the same way in any other sport as well. Unfortunately, it is also comments, like a few of the ones above, that also give fans a bad name. I have grown up in an Earnhardt househould. I also choose to root for Smoke and Jimmie Johnson, as I have personally met and spent time with each of thm. If any of the 3 of them would have pulled that crap, I would have yelled just as loud as I did when Jeff did it. Don't just assume that all fans of certain drivers are A**ES. The comments that have been made prove that other fans are just as bad and as much to blame for giving us fun loving, NASCAR worshipping, redneck hillbillies a bad name.

I am definitely not a Gordon fan but I do think that the fans throwing things onto the track is very wrong. There are better was to let your feelings be known even if it wouldn't do any good. Does throwing things on the track accomplish anything? No. Let your voice be heard in other ways, why prove what alot of people already say about NASCAR fans, that we are just a bunch of dumb rednecks?

Where was this race at? Chicago. Last time i looked this was a northern state. Why isnt when those high class people in NY or Boston act like fools they are given a pass. But if it happens at a race they are all a bunch of redneck hicks. FACE IT THERE ARE IDIOTS EVERYWHERE. Oh by the way all you Gordon haters ( i m not a gordon fan either) it the sun of god Dale Jr had bumped Matt out of the way like that they would have bragged how great a driver he is and would say that he learn that from the Great One Dale Sr

I totally agree with you. But the problem of acting like idiots doesn't just stop with Nascar. I am a big Nascar and soccer fan. Did you happen to watch the final of the World Cup and how the Frecnch captain attacked the Italian defender, or at any other sports events when the fans and players go crazy and assault people? When it come to competitive sports, fans and athletes are always going to be assholes, and there is nothing anybody can do about it because there are too many of them.

Okay, let me start off by saying I hate Jeff Gordon with a passion, he's a big baby...he's a pretty boy...and he thinks he's the best driver that has ever been ( which is totally false )...but the fans throwing things at him is wrong...yes...hate the man...that's good, but let not throw things at him...we all know what he did was wrong and childish...but don't throw things...that's not how humans are to act...you can hate someone without trying to hurt them...don't get me wrong...I have had dreams where I run Gordon off the road and his car goes off a cliff and he crashes and burns...but I could never do that...it's wrong...no matter how much I hate someone I could never hurt them in anyway...it's not right.

It was wrong...way wrong. Fans are dumb sometimes. They were mad to start with after the whole Kenseth thing and then you add a little alcohol, and then a little more...and then some more and you have a bunch of people gettin stupid and disrespectin NASCAR in its entirity. Stuff like that effects the sport from the highest levels down to the lowliest of fans...I agree people like that should be hunted down and banned from that particular race track.

I didn't like it either but the fans have a right to express their opinion of the race as long as no ones safety is in jeopardy and the race is over. It's part of what makes NASCAR so popular.

Yes, it's a low life, no class way to show your anger but I'll bet Jeff Gordon didn't mind. He's got their money in his bank account now.

If you ban us rednecks from the tracks for actions like this, the stands would be half empty and no one would be left to buy the overpriced merchandise.
