When I order a pizza for pick up typically I don't leave a tip, but last night I got take out from a mexican restaurant and just by habit left a tip. It got me to thinking... When is it considered rude to not tip and if I should tip them how much should I give them for just making it?

It is not necessary to leave a tip for takeout, but it is considered a kind and respectful gesture of gratitude. It doesn't have to be the typical 15% tip you would give a server, but a 10% tip would be sufficient. I used to be a waitress/hostess at a local restaurant. When I waited tables, people generally tipped fairly well, but when I hostessed...I hardly got anything even though I took take-out orders. However, often the hostess is not only required to take the order, but they are the ones who go to retrieve your order, verify its accuracy, and prepare it for your pickup. (i.e. place napkins, utensils, condiments, etc. into the bag). Since a hostess is already busy enough seating people and taking orders, it is nice to have someone show appreciation for the work done preparing your pick up order.

Regardless if you are having it delivered or you are picking it up you should tip. The server took your order, got your order together, totalled your order and got you anything else you may need. So why not tip? How much should I give them for just making it?? They did all the work you didn't. At least 10% is a good starting point for tipping. If the service was excellent and beyond your expectations then 20% or more should be left. Remember a lot of the servers only make about $2 an hour plus tips.

Tipping a carryout person or pickup person is not like tipping a cashier. They put together the meal. A pizza may be a little different because they don't do anything, but in restaurants where they normally have sit down tables the server must put together most of your meal. They may also have tables and be only recieving 2.13 an hour or a little more. In this situation I think you should tip, but only 10-15 percent.

When you leave a tip you are leaving it for the waitress or delivery person that helped you during the course of your meal. When you have takeout a waitress was not needed and it was not delievered. So no tip. It would be like tipping the cashier at the grocery store.

As a general rule.....tip 20% for good service and 10 to 15% for less than good service.

You're are basically giving them a tip for preparing and packaging the food for you; that cost is included in the price they charge you. A tip seems wasteful. Same with tip jars on counters; the price includes them making and packaging my food or beverage, so no tip. That's not being cheap. I don't tip a car salesman. I don't tip the checker at the gas self-serve gas station when I go in to pay. I don't tip Albert Pujols when he hits two home runs during my visit to Busch Stadium. No tip for take out.

I tip whenever I want...if the person I'm dealing with is really nice and makes me feel good about spending my money there I'll tip...pick-up...delivery or table service...doesn't matter....

so often I run across terribly unprofessional attitudes...so when I do get a really great person...I tip them...I want to encourage them to keep being great with their customers because I appreciate it when staff are friendly and actually add a smile to my day...they deserve a reward for it...

If you frequent the same place a lot, then it is nice to leave them a buck or two - you get better and faster service, and they greet you like you are family when you come in. Sometimes the place I go every week throws in free soda or cheesy garlic bread.

Some places have a tip jar, like the Chinese restuarant near me. Its right next to the cash register. Sometimes I leave something and sometimes I don't.

If I am coming to pay and pick up my meal, I don't see why I should have to leave a tip. No one had to deliver it or wait on me.

I only tip if I am at a table and being waited on by a server.
