Try pouring two cups of vinegar in the dishwasher and run through a regular wash cycle. I do this once every couple of months and haven't had any buildup.

Here is some information about it all:
Soap scum is a white, waxy buildup that forms on your tiles and doors. In combating soap scum on shower doors, an ammonia solution has the double advantage of being both an effective glass cleaner and a strong all-purpose cleaner.
Steps:
1. Make ammonia solution consisting of 1/2 c. ammonia in 1 gal. water.
2. Pour some solution into a spray bottle.
3. Spray the shower door.
4. Use a sponge or stiff-bristled brush to scrub affected areas.
5. Rinse well.
Warnings:
Keep room ventilated well while working.
Ammonia can irritate your skin, so wear gloves and rinse doors well after cleaning.
Ammonia and bleach form a toxic gas when mixed. Do not mix the two cleaners.
Well, I hope this helps a lot. Good luck!!

Use Oxalic Acid which can be bought at most drug stores. Be sure and rinse the dishwasher twice! This is extremely poisonous but it does work. My Mom told me about it years ago.
