OK, so he was an egomaniac. He finished dead last at West Point, and only got the "General" as an honorary title. He assumed, like most other Americans at the time, that Native Americans were a backward people who would be poorly armed, poor fighters, and that there were not many of them in the area. He didn't realize that he was walking into an entire gathering of Indian nations, and that they were sometimes better equipped than he was.

Well.....he wanted to be President and felt that a few big wins over the Indians would gain him a lot of popularity and he could get elected by being the fearless fighter of the plains. Guess they showed him a thing or two!!!
