If so, why do fundamentalist Christians give the party their unswerving support?

you don't have to be a certain religion to support the Republican party. There are issues and ideas they have that do not center around religion. Christians give them their support because the alternatives do not believe in the same thing that Christians do. And not ALL Christians are republicans.

Political parties within the United States are often defined by their supporters, or base. Republican party has been "hijacked" by the religious right for some time (since Regan). It is up to those who are apart of this party, to define it.

As such I would not give any party unswerving support. Consider each politician desperately. I am often saddened by individuals who spout party programming as if they were an anchorman from Foxnews.

I would never vote for Hillary if Mccain was running, but would dump Bush for Hillary. It depends on the person, not the party. No individual should support any party without regard to that persons personal views.

I don't see why not. It is not that fundamentalist Christians give the party their unswerving support, it is because the party customizes its message to appeal to those who consider themselves as fundamentalist Christians. Fundamentalist Christians are usually those who believe that it is their duty as both Americans and Christians to point out the moral failings of others and to control their immoral behavior as much as possible. This philosophy matches the moral philosophy of conservatives pretty closely and thus, fundamentalist Christians can be called upon to donate large sums of money to the Republican party.

In response to the other answers, this question is NOT like saying that all Republicans are Christians. This question is not asking if an atheist or devout Muslim can be Republican... I know from personal experience that there are atheist and Muslim Republicans.

That said, I don't expect any of them to be elected to any public office anytime soon. Sure, it's possibly for them to run for office... but I don't think they can be fully honest about themselves (which, I guess, would be about right for a Republican anyway...)

All republicans are not Christians. Some republicans are Republicans because of social and financial stances, not moral or religious. And as far as being a devout Muslim, they are way more strict than Republicans on moral standards. They execute homosexuals, they only allow certain music and television, they only allow certain apparel, and you can be tried and executed in some muslim countries for not obeying the Law of Islam. Does that sound like the partyline of Liberal/Democrats to you?

That depends on what you mean by possible. Is it possible to reconcile the beliefs? Absolutely, being a republican has nothing to do with religious beliefs, it is a political position, mostly interested with keeping government and its influence small. Being a conservative in this nation has a lot to do with religious beliefs. As far as is it possible, like would you be elected? Sadly, probably not in our lifetime, due to the fact that most Republicans are conservative christians.

Politial beliefs, whether Republican, Demacrat, or Liberterian, doesn't revolve around christianity necessarily. I know I'll get flack about this, but Demacrats have become far too leftist for my taste, even though I don't believe in all the Rebublican beliefs either. As for Muslims, Our beliefs, whatever the polititcal party are too diverse to even be considered for politial office. Remember, that we are Infidels as far as they're concerned. As for atheistism, Demecrats should be more to their liking.

That's like saying all republicans are Christians. From the actions they make sometimes, I'd say few of them are. Some Christians are even democrats. You just won't see many Christians voting for a candidate who is for perversion and baby-killing.

Sure it is. They have gays called the Log Cabin repubelicans which I cannot understand for anything. These people are vilified by the rethugs but they still faithfully vote for them. Talk about self-loathing.

Bottom line...rethugs will accept votes and steal them if necessary from anyone. They are hypocrits.
