And do you think that it irritates them? Or do they just ignore it?

as an English teacher, I have challenged students to reduce how often they say "like" in inappropriate spots. I mark down on the board every time a students says it and the student then sees how often. I have even offered money to specific students if they can complete a 15 second answer without using the word. My kids are learning from me not to use it, but then they leave the house and hear from all their friends...I'm fighting a losing battle against the world.

My mom says this all the time, "And, like this and all" and she will also say, "You know what I mean?" I can't stand it! We will tell her that she says it, but she doesn't see it as much as we do. I know a lot of people who use the word UM and What not, I believe it is their way of getting their mind in order while talking. It is still irritating. As for the word LIKE, I have to actually stop someone when they use it constantly. I don't think it irritates them at all. I agree with you. I get irritated.

I have a tendency to use those, unfortunately, but I don't use them excessively. I know I get esspecially irritated when I'm listening to a speaker and every five words are split by "um", "uh" or some other useless utterance.

If I'm with my buddies I will, especially "huh", "you know", "a'int" and "fixin'" - and I also tend to curse more.

Never if I'm at work though.

I don't think it irritates my friends though. We all tend to talk a lot differently around each other than we ever would in a professional setting.

What a great question! I'm not a language expert, but I think that we use those "pausing words" as a way to collect and organize our thoughts. Have you noticed that few of us use them when we respond by typing?

I try not to, but I do use the word "like" alot. It seems like the more comfortable I am around that person, the more I use it.

I try not to use them much. Only the most charismatic people can totally stop using them. As long as you don't use them much, you will be fine.
