why do lifts have braille letters/numbers next to the buttons?

believe it or not, some blind people actually know where they're going if they've been there before. blind people function in society too, you know.

Course they know where the lift is. They can ask someone if they don't know. They're blind, not stupid. But once they're in the lift, they don't know which button is which. That's why the Braille is there.

There are people who are legally blind but not completely that need to use braille so it could be intended mainly for their use. That is also why many elevators now 'ding' as they pass each floor so that blind people can tell how many floors they have passed.

The blind don't need to see where the lift is. But once they're on it, they must know which button is which...

It is so they can tell what number corresponds with the number they want to push. Then they keep track of the floor they are on by listening to the bell or tones that are heard each time you go up or down to a new floor.

No nor the floor they are going to but this helps. It is also for partially blind people who can't see well enough to choose a floor.

Of course they know where it is. THey have guide dogs dont they and if they live in a block of flats or work in an office block with a lift they will know where it is. How naive are you????
