It depends on what kind of immigrants. During the 19th century we had immigrants from all over Europe and Asia. Most of these immigrant assimilated the American Culture and language while keeping their own customs. Some of the descendents of these immigrants still keep the culture of their forefathers alilve by belonging to cultural and religious societies they formed to keep some of their traditions alive. By learning the language and publically assimulating the culture these immigrants contributed greatly to the host country. Their children and grandchildren have gone to college, began prosperous businesses and hold high positions in both government and corporate America.

However, at this time, illegal aliens are a drain on the host country's ecomony. Because they work for minimum wage or below, they have no medical insurance. They work mostly under the table and therefore pay no city, state or federal taxes. Although they do contribute considerble purchasing power to the economy, the cost of ESL (English as a second language) in schools, medical care, and the constant cost of policing borders and dealing with deportation proceedings is prohibitive.

Also illegal aliens, especially if given amnesty, have an unfair advantage over the thousands of people all over the globe who applications to enter this country legally languish at embassies because their allotment will be taken by those who did not complete the legal process. These immigrants in waiting are in oppresed countries in Africa, Asia, the Carribean and South and Central America. They are not just Europeans. These immigrants are willing to play by the rules, learn the language and attempt to assimilate into the society. These immigrants will pay taxes, become employed and given their willingness to come here and earn their way will eventually contribute to society in the same manner that the nineteenth century immigrants did.

I am personally for immigration. But I am for legal immigration. Immigrants who use goods and services, do not pay taxes, and send most of their earnings to the "mother" country are a drain on our resources.

Their are many problems with immigrants. If they come into america legally that is alright with me. American citizens have laws to abide by and so do they. I believe if immigrants are coming into this country illegally they are criminals. Why can't they come in the correct way? American citizen's jobs, social security, public welfare, education, and health are a few major factors to illegal immigrants coming into our country. And I am talking about all illegal not just Mexico. I think immigrants need to stand up for themselves in their home country instead of bringing their problems into ours. America has its own issues to take care of. Immigrants need to take care of their own and not run away from it.
