I was the same way while I was still in school
If your worried about the effect it's having on your health try snacking on somehting better for you (like berries or nuts).
If it's that you want something else to do with your mouth while you're studying, find something to "play" with. As disturbing as it might sound, I used to keep myself awake for long philosophy asignments by tying and untying cherry stems.

Really, there is nothing wrong with munching while studying. Just be aware of what you're munching ON and how much of it you're munching. Go to the grocery store and find a healthy (and possibly organic) snack. Annie's Chocolate Chip Bunny Grahams are my favourite. Consider fruits or vegetables too! Then, control how much of them you eat. One way to do that is to buy zip-lock baggies. If it's a snack food, look on the box and find out how much one portion is. Take out that amount and put it in the zip-lock baggie, and take ONLY that with you. If it's fruits or vegetables, locate your favorite dietary daily allowances site to find out what a healthy portion would be for you. You'll find yourself eating slower or eating half a bite at a time to save your snack because you won't have an unlimited supply with you. Over time you'll find you won't desire to munch as much, or even at all. Sometimes we have to force ourselves to change our behaviors, whether it's over-eating, smoking, etc. and there are many safe and effective avenues to accomplish our goals.

Actually, what you are doing can actually help you retain what your are reading better! If you have a habit of doing something else while working (listening to music, walking around, etc) that is your body's way of keeping itself occupied so your mind can concentrate. My college professor actually told me to chew gum or eat a light snack while studying and it has improved my grades. The best way to keep from getting fat from this is to simply eat sugar free gum or fat free foods (jelly beans, etc), just remember they have calories too! Good luck.

Chew gum or suck on breath mints or, even better, get a roll of Halls cough drops. The menthol in the Halls sticks with you as a aftertaste for a while, making EVERYTHING taste GROSS. (I've done it.)
If this doesn't cut it, munch on celery or carrot sticks or some other low-cal veggie. You'll get some of your 5-9 servings a day and get your munch fix.
Good luck!!!

Try drinking water and eating peanuts before you start to study. Take a break every hour and eat a tootsie pop or something in that order. Good luck.

Munch on celery and carrot sticks. Gum is OK as long as it is sugarless gum.

Replace whatever you're eating with healthier alternatives, and switch to sugar-free gum and diet sodas or water.

Well you could satisfy your oral fixation by picking up a smoking habit. (you would also loose some weight) but this is not at all recommended.
Don't buy the snack food, and you can't eat it. this is a better plan.
