CP has many different causes, and sometimes the exact cause is never known. In my son's case it was caused by the doctors.
He was face up while I pushed for 3 hours. The doctor NEVER showed up. He was deprived of oxygen, and as a result had seizures shortly after birth. My son's CP is a direct result of the doctor's negligence, I have the MRI to prove it. We are in the middle of a long, drawn-out lawsuit against the doctor, hospital, nurses and midwife that caused this lifelong struggle for my son.

Many times the cause of CP is due to medical negligence. The baby is or was left in distress during delivery and suffered oxygen deprivation. The MD and hospital staff take every precaution but unfortunately we are human and people make mistakes. The struggle begins when baby is injured at birth, dealing with the problems associated with the trauma and bringing a successful legal action can be very difficult if you don't have good help.

Cerebral palsy is not genetic, my elder sister has it! I have heard that it is possibly caused from a bacterial infection in side the mother, but my mum thinks it was because the Dr let her pregnancy go 4 weeks over due, my sister has a very severe case she can't walk or talk and she has been in a wheel chair all her life. And has had to have many operations to try and loosen the muscles from tightening so she can move... But she is very normal in the mind and we have had many arguments just like any other sisters would, i guess it is just one of those mystery's....

I haven't read extensively but what I HAVE read indicates a positive relationship between CP and birth trauma such as the other respondent detailed. Using forceps during delivery is connected; infant skull is soft in order to compress slightly during birth, but forceps are inflexible metal tongs used to pull the baby's head out and create pressure in ways not intended by nature. I'm sure you can find out more at www.cerebralpalsy.org or com.

my son has it. it is not the doctors fault. blame Adam and eve, we where born into sin. some people land up in wheelchairs but my son was lucky. he has a mild form of it and he walks great. he hates when I talk about it to anyone. when he went to school, he finished school, he was in special ed and he got all a's. when he was starting to walk, my husband and I pushed him to walk and the doctors told us that if we did not push him to walk he would be in a wheelchair. but not all people with cerebral palsy can walk. my son was born at home. it was not planned to have him at home. when we did get to the hospital, the doctors said everything was fine.. when he was three he was not walking great so we had him tested and that is how we found out he had c.p.
