If you read the fine print at the very end or very beginning of those shows, it says something like "participants are paid a small fee for their appearance". They probably get paid just about enough to get them there and stay for a few days, although it doesn't say how much in the fine print.

i seen judge Joe on a talk show he said that the judgment is paid by the show they are actual cases from California etc if your suing someone for 2000 bucks and you win the show will pay for it not the defendant.

I remember reading the text after the "People's Court" years ago. It said that both get paid for their appearance, but any judgement is taken out of the payment. However, it might be different now.

I actually think the defendants/plaintiffs pay to be on her show. Court costs are somtimes included in the judgement they win or lose.
