Yes, I've not only heard of them, I've been to many events that they sponsor or attend. Some of our local groups are very active and do a lot of good for the community. One group did a benefit fayre for The Make a Wish Foundation. The little boy they sponsered was made King for the day. He was able to hold court, had a tournament in his honor and was given a complete costume. It was wonderful seeing that little boy's face light up when he knighted the winner of the tournament.
Unfortunately, there are also local groups who are comprised of pure ego. I went to one event sponsered by them that was horrible. Anyone not in "correct" costume was treated very badly.
I prefer to think there are more groups like the first one.

My husband and children are members of the SCA. We just like to go to the events, as it is more like "camping with a purpose". We enjoy the fighting, we brew beer and make mead, and love the dressingup.
We help where we're needed, but the politics of the organization is enough to make you lose your cookies, so we do not try to "advance" within the SCA

Yes. I've actually been a member of on two different occassions. I attended a few events, including one in Winsor, Ontario. (I live in Indiana.) I never did make it to Pennsic War, but I bet that would have been a major experience.

I am a memeber and it is lots of fun! They have many learning experiences and lots of fun activities. Go to SCA.org and look up what is in your area. Try an event, go to a fighter practice, you'll find lots of nice people and lots of learning experiences. My group also has many children's activities, so if you have kids you can easily make it a family activty. Good luck!

I've heard of it and thought of joining, but never got around to it. It sounds like a blast though.
