It depends upon what software you are using to write your paper.. but this should work:

If you are using WindowsXP, you can find the alt-code of a character in windows by going to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Character Map

when you click the character you want.. it will show the alt-code in the lower right corner.

you enter this code into your document by selecting it.. and copying it.. or by pressing and holding the key while typing the code... example:

0177 gives you ±

You mean like putting in x² or 180º?
These are ANSI characters, usable by pressing and holding while typing numbers
gives ²
gives º
Also, some ANSI sets use a leading zero:
gives ³, which is not available without the leading zero (that I know of)
