·Either the Nile or the Amazon may be considered the longest river on Earth. The Amazon becomes the longest if it is measured by the long way around the south of the Isla de Marajó. Some believe a fair statement is that the Nile is the longest in the world, while the Amazon is the strongest.

The Nile is 6,690km long (4,157 miles). Its drainage area is 2,870,000km squared, and the average discharge is 5,100m cubed per second. It flows into the Mediterranean Sea and runs through Sudan, Ethiopia, Egypt, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Eritrea, Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Amazon is 6,387km long (6,762 the long way!). It drains 6,915,000sq. km. Its average discharge is 219,000cubed metres per second. It flows into the Atlantic Ocean and runs through Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela.

So it depends upon what you are measuring (and how, when talking about the Amazon!)
