I would like to file a claim for workplace harrassment. My co-workers are causing my work environment to become unstable. The last five people who had my position had left because of the co-workers in my department. My boss told me that he did not want to try to resolve the problem and he said it in front of the rest of the co-workers. Basically, the co-workers are has used defamation. One of my co-workers has called me something other than my name. A couple of co-workers who doesnt cause any troubles has told me that the ones that are causing trouble has been telling my boss horrible things that are not true about me. Also, I have endured embarrassment. Bottom line is my bosses attitude has changed for the worse towards me. How do I go about handling this matter? I would like to quit, but I have to pay my bills.

See if you human resources department has an Employee Relations person and start there. What you describe, unless it is racial, ethnic or sexual in nature, does not sound like it is protected by Civil Rights Act, but you could call your local EEOC office and describe it in more detail and they could advise you better. BTW, as for the "recording" suggested in a previous answer, recording another person without their knowledge and/or consent is not legal in most jurisdictions, but I do agree with documenting the incidents you are describing in a written record.

If you can find some of the previous worker it would be beneficial to file a class actions suit. Find a good employment attorney that won't get paid unless you win. Let your fingers do the walking. However, in most cases after you win (think positive) you will need to get another job or after the process is started, but don't give up. Someone has to have the balls to stop them.

Getting involved in litigation will, most likely, result in no good with a lot of money spent on your part. Most likely if you file suit, you could loose your job, or put on hiatus.

From your question we can't even tell if anything illegal is going on - you have no specifics.

Your bad was going to the boss first. . .bad move. You should always confront first (in 90% of situations), understand your coworkers motivations (this person doesn't go to work saying "damn I'm going to make XYZ feel like crap), and find a way to work together if possible.

Do you have a union that you can file a grievance with? If not, the best I can suggest is to carry a hand recorder with you at all times and start recording the comments and all interactions that might be useful. Keep accurate records of when things happened.

PS: Don't quit...yet. But start looking for another job. Then you can leave on your own terms.

You would sue over someone bad mouthing you?
Even if you got rid of the bad coworkers (which you wont) you still have an inept boss. Go looking for another job. Don't tell the next place you interview at why you are leaving. Tell them that you are looking for someplace to grow, something more challenging to your current skills.
These people are not worth your time. Get a new job.

Have you gone to human resources in regards to this matter? That would be my first visit. Don't hesitate to talk to your bosses boss in regards to your concerns. Keep it professional and to the point, so prepare before you go in. Don't discuss any of this with any co-workers, it will only make you look disgruntled and you will be viewed the problem. Sue for what? How replaced into he damaged (completely or lengthy time period)? He replaced into not disciplined for it. surely, they even apologized for the inconvenience. Can he sue? convinced. Will he win? fight fire with fire, become a workplace bully, publicly humiliate the ones giving you static. familiarize yourself with as much about the person as you can so your attack can be personal and vicious. eventually they will become accustomed to you firing back and they will move onto other prey.as far as your boss, he was probably one of the guys in that group that just lucked into the management spot he is in, go over his head.
