russian communism was born as a political other, the ideas of marx and then lenin and the bolshiveks were suited, idealy to an industrialised country, however europes reigimes were too strong to be overthrown, however, largely rural russia had its autocratic dictatorship overthrown, and after internal power struggles the bolshevik party managed to take power and institute a system of soviests (councils).

the irony of the communist takeover of russia is that it was still a largely agrarian and fudal economy, whereas marxism specificaly states that socialism is a revolution against an industrial capitalist system. in this way a doctrine of "actualy existing socialim" was born, and from there began the long downhill trend that eventual overthrew what was by the end of the 80s a huge and teetering beurocracy.

in china comunism was introduced with help from already existing socialist countries, and the actual path of the revolution which instated it was much more brutal. the society in china pre communism had been quite compartmentalised, into villages, so the establishment of small scale units subserviant to higher councils may not have been such a wrench. also china did not industrialise as fast as russia, alot of the industrialisation was attempted via (largely uncussesful) cottage industry, which reduced the dislocation caused by moving huge numbers of people into new places of work.

although maoism was not by any means a tolerent or open regime, there is an extra 3500 years of written history in china, which has probably helped people to maintain some sence of perspective about what this new form of government might mean.

finaly, in collapse russian comunism was killed by its failure to out perform western market capitalism, and the growing closness of east and west, which brought its failings starkley to light. in contrast, china has become one of the worlds leading economic forces, without having to "abandon" communism, for example they still have a 'five year plan' in china, a famous part of a command economy, however the country has largely become "free marketised" and is in the process of learning to out capitalism the west.

my two cents.
