That depends on so many factors. Like interest in the language, time devoted to learning, and those doing the teaching. The more fun it is, the faster you learn.

You need a vocabulary of around 3,000 words and an understanding of the grammar to understand 95% of what is written and spoken. That will take up to 400 hours with a teacher. It is also vital to maintain your enthusiasm for learning. The best book I ever found was the "Ealing Course in Spanish" followed by "Spanish self-taught" published by Funk and Wagnall (American). However, these are both rather old and will not have the vocabulary of computers, internet, satellite navigation, etc.

I'm a late bloomer and its been really tough, the more time I spend in Mexico using what I've learned the better but just about the time I'm feeling comfortable its time to head home. I spend roughly 2 months a year south of the border

Don't know - I am not average, but it took about 20-40 hours to get to a stage where I could be understood in every day life.
