A muppet, which is a creation of Jim Hanson, is a combination of a puppet and a marionette. A puppet uses a hand inside the puppet where as a marionette is controlled by strings. The muppet uses both methods of manipulation.

A muppet is a cross between a puppet and a marionette. A person uses it like a puppet, but they also manipulate the arms like a marionette.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that puppets are manipulated by strings and/or rods whereas muppets are manipulated by rods / strings and also parts of the muppeteer ie. hands and arms, whole body ( teletubbies etc)

I also seem to think that the term 'muppet' was coined and used to great effect by Jim Henson maybe as an amalgamation of the words man and puppet ?

The word Muppet was derived from 'Puppet' with the initial 'P' replaced by the 'M' for Marionette, another word for a puppet with strings.
