If CNN only had one story to report on a particular day?

Would they have to call it "The New", since it would not be plural?

I've often thought the media only do have one story to report on many days.

News is not plural.

You don't (properly) ask, "What are the news?" "What is the news" is the propery query.

On Sept 11 and 12 2001 there was only one story and they called it 'news.'
