Yes, desire is the driving force of the human race. We all desire, and we all suffer for it.

Its definitely a materialist world and I agree that there is too much coercive gift giving. That is people feel 'forced' to buy presents at regular intervals for no apparant reason other than the fact that we are just supposed to.

This is damaging socially and environmentally, not to mention that we end up spending money that we wouldn't otherwise spend.

Having said that, I still believe in 'random' gifts. If you give a gift without any expectation of getting one and without any reason other than you just feel like it then that is a real gift and something to be valued.

It doesn't have to be expensive or materialistic, just an expression of love.

The giving of gifts originally was to show respect and thanks for the time the recepient took to deal with us. However, yes, this is a materialist world now. The giving of birthday and Christmas presents was basically the invention of retailers within the last 100 to 150 years. Today, retail merchants take in roughly 45% of their yearly income during the Christmas season.

We give and take gifts (and desire things, for that matter) because as human beings we need belongings to identify ourselves. Even a belonging as simple as a chair is considered to be an item as valuable as gold in some countries. Unfortunately, as we make and find more things, we want more. Kinda makes our want for things look like a genetic defect, huh? -_-'

it's supposed to be the meaning behind the gift. not actually getting something but getting a feeling.

Yeah, this is a materialist world. 'Things' make us feel good. Giving things also makes us feel good.

Like my friend with the cool hat above me said: it's fun.
