One of the reasons humans are such a successful species is that we have the instinct to survive. Avoiding death at all costs is a biological mechanism known as an instinct that is inherited. In addition, social structures and education teach people to value life. Combined, these two mechanisms cause us to fear death.

One note. Suicide is the result of a mental illness that overrides one's instinct to survive. In addition, a person can be trained or brain washed into believing life has no value. A good example of this is a suicide terrorist.

I've been afraid of death since I was about 4 or 5 years old. The fear is for the unknown, and the loss of control.

Why on earth did you catagorize this question under physics?????????????? Do you even understand what phyics is? I can tell that you don't. As for your question; death is an unknown. And we as Homo Sapians have a need to be in control. We need to be aware of all that happens, and have the ability to change it. Everyone will die, and you can never tell exactly when, or ever totally prevent it. We are afraid of things we can't control.
