thats just the way it is. its messed up. if you switch lines, then that line starts moving slow and the line you were in speeds up

It's all about perception, I think. Whenever we are doing something not super-pleasant time always seems to go slower. It doesn't actually go slower, I don't think.
It's the same for your other question of why summer zips by and winter drags along. Actually for people who like snowboarding and skiing and don't like to be hot (can't imagine that but...) it may just be the other way around for them.
Of course, there are instances where the next line does go faster than the one you're in, and that's just bad luck.
Patience, one day your turn will come and the supermarket checkout line you will find yourself in will move at lightspeed!!

If you're talking about the grocery store, the key is to avoid getting behind an older lady. (imho) 9 times out of 10, she whips out a checkbook and the whole line groans. I would rather wait behind a guy with a cart full of stuff who pays with a debit card.
If you mean traffic lane, well...that's just Murphy's law.

SO SUPER FRUSTRATING!!!! i was at the movies on the weekend and two teens infront of me ending up spilling their pop all over the counter as they were leaving. well the person behind the counter couldn't have moved any slower! she got one papertowel at a time to try and sop up the mess. i would have changed lines but none of the others were moving any faster! it's true - i actually got through my line before the people in the line next to me.

There are several reason why the line might move slow. I would have to think that maybe we have an unexperienced cashier. We could have an old cashier. We could have some older people that walks slow ahead or maybe people are undecided about what they want. Always something.

I thought that just happened to me! I'm glad to know that happens to everyone. And then when you get out of that line and go to a new one, the one you were previously in moves quicker.

It is a matter of perspective. If you are in a hurry it just seems longer.
