I saw a program that dealt with probablity someyears ago (QED on BBC, I think), and it looked into this.

Their research showed that it landed 50/50 buttered/unbuttered.

The reason we think it always lands butter side down is that we tend to remember it when it does, and forget about it when it lands butter side up...

Apparently.

Incidentally, the person below is entirely wrong, for laws of physics which i won't go into...

No, it just seems like it when you're the one who has to clean it up. I do recall having the toast fall butter-side up on several occasions in my life.

not always, it depends on what is on the toast, butter or jelly or both and how thick it is and how far it falls. it is all a matter of the heaviest side being first. kinda like an arrow. the tip is heaviest, therefore it goes first.
