When taken correctly and consistently, the Pill is estimated to be about 99.7 to 99.9 percent effective in preventing pregnancy. This means that only one to three women out of 1,000 who take the Pill properly will get pregnant in the first year.

If you don't take the Pill exactly as prescribed — for example, if you start a new pack late or miss pills without using back-up contraception — the likelihood that you'll get pregnant is much higher. And the more mistakes you make, the higher the risk. So while the Pill is one of the most reliable methods of birth control available for women who follow instructions to the letter and never miss any pills, it's not the best method for everyone.

If you think you'll have trouble taking the Pill properly, consider using another method, such as the IUD or the birth control shot (Depo-Provera), both of which are very effective.

Although the Pill is an excellent contraceptive method, it doesn't offer any protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). So if you're at risk for STIs, you'll need to use condoms as well.

I was taking the pill for a year and didn't miss one pill i was taking them everyday at the same time and still got pregnant. I am now 34 weeks pregnant. You need to use condoms too or something else to protect you while on the pill.

took the pill every day, on time, for about 4 years. never had a problem. when used correctly the pill is approx. 99% effective. follow the directions, and remember that if you are on antibiotics or are vomiting, the pills will not work. you'll need to use a backup method of birth control (ex: condoms, etc)

Let me tell you that the possibilty is always there. I got pregnant twice on the pill and the doctors all said I must have missed a dose or I should have been more careful in timing my dose. That was until I got pregnant using the Norplant.

((Norplant----> Norplant is a form of birth control released in 1991 by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, consisting of a set of six small, silicone capsules filled with levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin used in many birth control pillsand inserted into a women's upper arm.))

When taken correctly to prevent pragnancy, oral contraceptives have a failure rate of less than 1% (1 pregnancy per 100 women per year of use) when used perfectly without missing any pills. The typical failure rate of large numbers of pill users is 5% per year when women who miss pills are included.

My mother was on birth control and she got pregnant. Birth control is not enough. Use a condom!
