You need to find out what type of ram you have. Find out how many slots you have available and purchase more ram. If you have a dual channel ram system you need to buy the sticks in pairs. Some systems require a certain speed of ram so you have to match what you already have. Go to the website (if one available) for your type of computer and they may have info about your system and speed requirements.

well duh you can. if you have a pre built computer like Dell or HP, find out what slot your memory is.
If you use Intel, they use DDR2 memory
if you use AMD, they use DDR memory
thats very very important
you slots will be something like 184pin S-DRAM or something
that is just an example
once u find it out
go to www.newegg.com
go to the left hand side column and there should be a couple extension things to reach some called Memory or RAM i forget
but from there
narrow it down
like
DDR2
1gb
184pin S-DRAM
then pick from there
try to pick the ones with the best ratings
like 5 out of 5 eggs and make sure they have a lot of voters too
not like 5 or 6 voters
and make sure u take out your old RAM and not use it ever again
your old 256 will slow down your 1 gb

Take a look at my profile and read my favorite links.

My favorite RAM seller is http://www.4allmemory.com

You can basically put in your computer info into that site and it will tell you exactly what RAM you need and how much you can upgrade it to. Its the cheapest site I know.

Then you need to open up your tower and install your RAMS into the little slots that have your existing RAMS connected to it. Its the most easiest part of your computer to access. If you need further directions, you can contact me. You just snap and click them in. If you have 4 slots, then you can just add more memory and leave your old memory in there for additional boost.

You'll have to refer to your motherboard documentation to ensure that it will support 1GB of RAM. Most will, however. The easiest way to find out what RAM will work in your PC, and if your motherboard will support it, is probably to go to http://www.crucial.com - they have a tool that you can run that scans your PC hardware and identifies what RAM is supported, and how much.

To actually replace it, you'd have to open the case, pull the old RAM, and add the new RAM. If you've never done that before, I'd recommend getting help from someone who has, or taking the PC to a computer store to get the RAM installed.

It will depend on the motherboard. Information should be in the manual for the motherboard or your computer. If you do not have these you can find the manual from the model of your computer or identify the motherboard using software like Belarc Advisor and find the manual on the net. The manual will tell you the type of ram and the capacity of the motherboard.

First you must check your motherboard out, What RAM it supports like ddr400 or ddr2-667 or 533, then you can go to a computer store and buy the correct type of ram for your PC. If you have your motherboards manual you can check what brand of ram it supports and thier sizes.

on ur mother board, there r commonly 3 slots of ram in which u can plug ur rams. when u will buy 1gb ram, it will be a single stick or 2. Then open the cover of ur system and remove the 256mb ram stick and plug in ur 1gb ram stick and press it gently.
now cover up ur system and switch it on. it will tell u that ur ram has been changed from 256 to 1gb.

no because if you have 256 ram your computer's processor most likely can't read that much memory
