i have looked at other sites like e-trade. but they seem to need big investments. I just want a hobbie.

www.sharebuilder.com lets you open with no minumums and buy better quality stocks in increments as opposed to investing in penny stocks which are risky!

There are brokers with no account minimums but they charge fee's which make it extremely difficult to grow a small account. $500 isn't enough to start trading with, you need at least $2,500. For your situation Robinhood.com would be a good option as they DON'T charge fee's. They make money off the interest of customer deposits which all brokers do. It's perfect for newbies with small account sizes looking to get a feel for the market.
