You do have to wear shoes, or something covering the soles of your feet when driving in certain states. I have recieved a ticket in florida for driveing with no shoes, it was just a 55 dollar fine, and no points but it is a saftey issue according to the police officer who cited me.. So... just wear flip flops and pop them on if you get pullled

In the United States this is a matter of state or local law. Your state *may* require shoes. Illinois does not for example.

No state requires you to wear shoes when driving a car. Some do require footwear when driving a motorcycle.

It is illegal to drive with just socks on but you can drive bearfooted. If you drive with socks they say that your foot could slip off the pedals and lose control of your car. Your feet can't slip if your bearfooted.
