First off, he is my favorite player. But I wouldn't want to trade places with him right now. Second place in the World Cup is very tough to swallow. I am not sure why folks hate him. I really don't hear too many Zidane haters out there. Italy are poor sports. Always have been, always will be. They flopped their way through the World Cup, talked crap to other players (hence, the headbutt), got outplayed and got their weak will broken by a team that had 9 men out on the pitch (U.S.),elbowed players to the face intentionally, got breaks from FIFA refs that allowed them to advance (Australia-Italy), and generally played boring football. Simply a mediocre team outlasting everyone else. The tortoise and the hare. So if folks are hating on Zidane, they are probably Italian. And they probably wish they could have such a good guy and good player like him on their team so they don't get spanked in the next World Cup.

No hate here.
But, it`s funny to see FIFA award him when there is all this fuss with fair play and stuff!!! Come on, what message are we sending our kids? That it`s ok to loose your temper and hit someone if you`re good at what you do?
I`m sorry but I don`t think Zidane should have been given the best player award...
As for FIFA, no surprise there!!! Remember what they did when they had that world vote for best player yet? People voted for Maradona but FIFA gave out a second best player award to Pele just because he`s "cleaner"!!!
Bunch of hypocrites!!!!!

I for one don't hate him. He is one of the reason's the Italians won. When he done what he done, he took the best penalty kicker away from the French. Giving the Italians an advantage. It was a great game, great ending. Also, I don't think his actions marred the performance or the game. It made for interesting TV. One more thing, more of the US population watched this year than any other year ever. Could futbol be gaining popularity in the states. I for one am more intrigued than ever.

I agree, he is a great player. The attack was provoked and a sad end to a great footballers career.
THE BBC SAYS
The BBC's Ten O'clock News also called in experts to study the television footage of the incident and determined the following:
Materazzi's first word to Zidane was "no" before he then told him to "calm down".
He then accused him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family" on the day the Frenchman's mother had been taken to hospital ill. This was followed by "Go f*** yourself".
